Hoy Quarlow is a 78-year-old Chinese boxer born in Beijing. He made his only appearance in the SNES version of Super Punch-Out!! as the second boxer in the Special Circuit. Hoy Quarlow, being 78 years old, is the oldest boxer in the entire series. In his battle, he generally uses kung-fu movements in his attacks, which makes him the game's most unorthodox boxer. He has no palette swap.

Appearances[]

Super Punch-Out!! (1994)[]

Quarlow Sprite

In the SNES version of Super Punch-Out!!, Hoy Quarlow attacks mostly with a wooden staff, and also some kicks, even though it's illegal as it's supposed to be a boxing match. Like Dragon Chan, Hoy Quarlow also utilizes kung-fu and kick-boxing. He has fast attacks and quickly avoids most of the player's attacks. Hoy Quarlow sometimes pushes you to the side if he blocks any of your attacks.

He has two special attacks where he waves his staff and thrusts it at his opponent a few times at the head and the body. If he waves his staff high, he will follow with six jabs to the head and four to the body. If he waves his staff low, he will follow with two jabs to the body, three to the head, two to the body, and three to the head. He also has an attack where he spins around and flails his arm at you. Similar to Super Macho Man's spin punches, this must be ducked.

Moves[]

  • Jab: Hoy Quarlow uses his staff to hit the player's head.
  • Body Blow: Hoy uses his staff to hit the player's body,
  • Kick: Hoy kicks the player. Can be dodged.
  • Open Palm Jab: Hoy uses his open palm to hit the player.
  • Quick Downward Swings: Hoy Quarlow jumps to the sides and swings his cane downwards. Sometimes he fakes the attack, but he can never do two fakes in a row.
  • Backhand Spin: Hoy Quarlow spins around and hits the player with the back of his hand. This must be ducked.
  • High Staff Shake Combo: Hoy shakes his staff high and does 6 jabs and 4 body blows.
  • Low Staff Shake Combo: Hoy shakes his staff low and attacks in this order: two body blows, three jabs, two body blows and three jabs.

Dizzy Knockdown[]

Hoy Quarlow moves in a circle while spinning around. Punch him when he is in the center.

Rule Infractions[]

As per the unified rules of boxing established by the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combat Sports:

  • Hoy Quarlow has the distinction of having the third most illegal uniform in the franchise behind Donkey Kong and Mad Clown:
    • He wears a baggy shirt. Since the Special Circuit is equivalent to big circuit professional boxing, he's not allowed to wear his baggy shirt as it makes it harder for the referee to determine legal blows.
      • Baggy clothes are forbidden in boxing as they can make the fighter potentially trip around the ring.
    • His pants go below his knees which isn't allowed in boxing.
    • Instead of boxing shoes or boxing boots, he wears slippers.
    • He has long hair, which is not allowed as it can obscure the boxer's vision or get removed by force.
    • He also has a long beard, which is also not allowed as it can cushion the jaw.
  • He also has a highly illegal fighting style:
    • Backhands are not allowed.
    • Kicks are not allowed. He also jumps while performing his kick, making it a jumping attack and it's own separate infraction.
    • Open palm strikes are not allowed.
    • His staff counts as a foreign object.
    • He uses his staff to attack Little Mac, which counts as attacking the opponent with a foreign object which is a separate infraction for each time he uses it.
    • When Hoy uses his special staff attack, he first moves the staff around quickly, which can be seen as trying to make Little Mac lose focus.
    • His Spinning Backfist Punch has him showing his back, which counts as throwing the fight and would make him automatically lose the fight if he does the move three times.
    • He also shoves Little Mac, which is illegal as it is deemed to be a wrestling move and not a boxing move.
    • Normally, jumping isn't illegal in boxing, but Hoy's highest jumps are too high to be considered legal, due to the potential of stalling the match.
  • His first quote says: "Please, take it easy on a poor old man, won't you?" Meaning he wants Little Mac to take it easy on him. This counts as persuasion, which is not allowed in boxing.
  • Hoy is too old for boxing. Boxers can compete over the age of 40, but Hoy is 78 years old, meaning he should've retired 38 years ago.

Hoy Quarlow has 17.5 infractions.

Quotes[]

  • "Please, take it easy on a poor old man, won't you?" (first match)
  • "Still a bit wet behind the ears aren't you sonny? You make good exercise." (rematch)
  • "You are a spirited one, kid. Spar again with me sometime." (endgame)
  • "Huah!" (When using a strong move, like the spin)
  • "Huowgh!" (When knocked down)
  • "Uhh!" (When hit with a KO Punch, or stunned in which case the audio will play in slowmo)

Trivia[]

  • He is the most unorthodox boxer in Super Punch-Out!! as every single one of his attacks is illegal in boxing. He held the title as the most unorthodox boxer in the series, until Punch-Out!! Wii came out and both Donkey Kong and Aran Ryan got more infractions than him (if Hoy never does his long staff combo).
  • He holds the record as the oldest boxer at 78 years old, and lightest one at 100lbs.
  • Hoy Quarlow and Heike Kagero are the only opponents in the Japanese release of Super Punch-Out!! (SNES) to not feature their names written using characters from the Latin alphabet.
  • Hoy is one of three boxers who has no cornerman, the others are Rick and Nick Bruiser.
  • With 62 wins before fighting Little Mac, Hoy Quarlow has the second highest amount of wins on his record in the franchise, with only Mr. Dream being higher, having 99 wins on his record before fighting Little Mac.
  • The perfect time against Hoy Quarlow is 0'08"35 in the NTSC version, first achieved by zallard1, and 0'08"32 in the PAL version, first achieved by Cranklinson.
